Woven Grove
Congratulations to Hannah Ramos!
UBC Inspired is pleased to announce the recipient of this year’s Student Art and Animation Fund: Hannah Ramos, for her project Woven Grove, a community crochet installation to bring softness, care, and connection to campus.
Hannah Ramos is a Bachelor of Science student in Food, Nutrition and Health. She is a self-taught, free-form crochet artist and upcycler whose work explores care, sustainability, and emotional storytelling through yarn. Crochet began as a pandemic hobby and became a grounding practice that supported her mental wellbeing and creative voice. Through Woven Grove, she hopes to help others experience that same sense of connection to their hands, their community, and the environment.

Hannah envisions this project as a community-driven initiative and will be hosting crochet workshops on campus over the next few months so community members will have an opportunity to contribute to the final art piece, using biodegredeable materials she will provide. In the artist’s own words, here’s more about Woven Grove, and how you can get involved in bringing it to life!

Woven Grove is a community crochet installation created to bring softness, care, and connection to campus. 2025 has been a heavy year for many students. This project is a gentle response to that weight. It’s an invitation to slow down, make something with your hands, and contribute to something bigger than yourself.
Members of the UBC community are invited to donate crocheted squares and uplifting messages using biodegradable materials. These pieces will be sewn together and transformed into a bold, dream-like yarn forest in UBC’s Bosque. Think: Alice in Wonderland, but made of yarn.
The installation will feature:
- crocheted vines
- leaves and flowers
- whimsical insects
- messages of care
- and hundreds of handmade squares
All squares and messages will be interwoven with Hannah Ramos’s one designs into one immersive environment.
Installed in September*, the forest is meant to welcome students into a new semester with a moment of pause and wonder, a place where passersby feel briefly transported into another world.
*Pending permitting approvals. This project is subject to UBC’s Development Permit process.
Hannah will be hosting free crochet workshops to bring the community together to contribute to this piece. Learn a new skill, make some new friends, and make your mark on this project! Workshops will be designed for all levels of ability and will utilize biodegradable materials.

Do I need experience?
Nope! beginners are welcome, and this is a great opportunity to learn a new skill, make some new friends, and contribute to community art.
Do I have to finish in one session?
Not at all. Work at your own pace, and drop off your contribution whenever you’re ready! There is a box on the first floor of the CIRS building at 2260 West Mall (located in the Food Hub Market seating area).
Can I just come hang out?
Of course–observing counts too!
What can I crochet?
Hannah will be interweaving all contributed pieces with her own designs, which will include nature elements and uplifting messages. As the final installation will be displayed in a public realm space on campus, crochet contributions must adhere to all UBC protocols around public space usage (no offensive images or language, political or religious affiliation, etc). The final piece will be approved by a permitting board that oversees placemaking and public realm projects.
We ask that you please use biodegradable materials for your crochet. Don’t have any? Stop by one of our workshops and we’ll provide it!
Is this safe for the trees?
UBC takes the health and safety of trees and soft landscape in the public realm very seriously, and ensures that any proposed initiatives that may have impact are carefully and thoroughly vetted before moving forward.
