Fluttering Into Spring: A Look Back at Social Butterflies

Social Butterflies was a free outdoor pop-up event created and hosted by student staff from UBC Campus + Community Planning’s Community Engagement Crew.

On March 31, students were welcomed into Lee Square to unwind, connect, and celebrate the arrival of spring. The event featured sweet treats, live music, and creative activities designed to spark reflection and foster a sense of community.

One highlight was the butterfly message wall, where students shared words of affirmation on colorful butterfly notes to encourage their peers through the final stretch of the school year. By the end of the event, an incredible 188 notes were fluttering on display.

At the postcard station, more than 150 postcards were written and mailed, giving students a chance to pause and send thoughtful messages to loved ones.

A special thank-you goes to Rain or Shine for helping guests stay cool with ice cream, and to Celina Grace and Naira Arafah from the UBC Music Initiative for filling Lee Square with vibrant acoustic performances.

Social Butterflies was organized by the Community Engagement Crew (CEC), a team of student staff at Campus + Community Planning that work across all the units to support a range of community initiatives, from transportation to community programs, to engagement and sustainability.

Interested in joining the CEC? Keep an eye out for the job posting in the summer at UBC Career Centre.

This event was organized in partnership with UBC Inspired, part of the Community Development and Transportation unit within Campus + Community Planning, which supports UBC’s vision for a vibrant, connected campus community.
