Thrive by the Fire

To celebrate the start of Thrive month,  UBC Campus + Community Planning has Blank Vinyl Project and UBC Wellbeing to bring you Thrive by the Fire, a cozy concert outdoors.

This one day pop-up event will transform Lee Square into a cozy relaxation space with toasty table seatings and chill tunes from UBC’s own student musicians. Connect, meet new people, and take time to unwind, and check out the Thrive resource booths. Make sure you also come with the title of your go-to song that helps you to thrive to add to our community playlist!

Everyone is welcome at this FREE drop-in style event:

  • Wednesday, November 2, 2023
  • 11:00am to 2:00pm
  • M.C. Money Lee Square, outside by the UBC Bookstore
  • Limited toasty table seating available on a first-come-first-served basis
  • Thrive resource booths

Event takes place outdoors and will run rain or shine (tenting available in the event of rain)

This year’s Thrive by the Fire performers are:

11:15am | Sours:
An indie rock/pop band living it up in the underground Vancouver music scene. Check out our very recently released debut album “Bittersweet Sit Down”

11:50am | Shimbashi Station:
Shimbashi Station is an indie-rock band from Vancouver, Canada. Starting as an idea in a Tokyo train station in 2019, the band has taken time to craft a unique and groovy sound featuring Cody Clark on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Kristian Goze on Drums and Vocals, Jeffrey Felix on Keys and Guitar, and Ivar Swanson on Bass Guitar and Vocals. Shimbashi Station released their debut EP in February of 2023 and are already working on a more music including a full album!

12:35pm | LÉRAL:
Léral is an American born, South African raised singer and creative storyteller. She is interested in writing songs for and about healing from generational trauma. Her genre could be described as soul pop (she calls it “soup”). Some of her musical inspirations include Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, and Tierra Whack. When she is not performing in and around Vancouver, she teaches vocal lessons to students from ages 6 to 60 (all ages). You can follow her vocal coaching business at @leralstudio. Through teaching and performing, Léral shares her genuine passion and fascination with the voice as a musical instrument.

12:50pm | Conan:
Rollie Miller is a singer/songwriter and producer originally from Alberta, who’s blunt and somber songwriting details the struggles of navigating young adulthood and self discovery

1:15pm | Julia Groening:
Julia is a self-written, solo artist specializing in folk/pop music. With a lifelong passion for music and songwriting, she puts words to challenging feelings and experiences in her lyrics while seamlessly blending her melodic vocals with guitar for a captivating sound. Her songs are a testament to her ability to connect with audiences on a meaningful level. Before going solo, Julia began as the lead vocalist/guitarist of the folk/pop duo band Focale, performing since 2021.

1:30pm | Shaurya:
I’m an independent artist and producer from Dubai. I write songs in Hindi and English and have an experimental production style which bridges the gap between desi pop and the western indie wave.

About

The first Thrive by the Fire started in 2019 as a pop-up style outdoor music event held on UBC Vancouver Campus, at the end of November to coincide with UBC Thrive month. Now an annual autumn tradition, Thrive by the Fire is hosted by UTown@UBC (part of UBC Campus + Community Planning) in collaboration with UBC Wellbeing and the student-run organization, Blank Vinyl Project.
