Queering Kinship
Join UBC Inspired (part of Campus + Community Planning), Arts and Culture District, and Exposure UBC on August 7th, for an afternoon celebrating lineages of love and communities of care at Queering Kinship!
Come laugh, connect, learn & create!
Pack a picnic, bring some pals and share an afternoon of arts, culture, and community love and connection. We’re thrilled to partner with the UBC Arts and Culture District and Exposure UBC on Queering Kinship: Celebrating Lineages of Love and Communities of Care, an outdoor queer community celebration.
The Arts and Culture District between Buchanan and the Belkin will be transformed from 12-4pm into a community space for celebration, education and connection.
Join us for a fabulous lineup of free activities, including:
- Outdoor stage featuring 2sLGBTQIA+ student performers
- Vendor and organization booths
- Student photo exhibit sharing untold stories of queer Chinese elders
- Collaborative community art making
- Cozy outdoor space with picnic area, lawn games and more!
- Queer pop-up library, courtesy of UBC Libraries
- A drag extravaganza hosted by Gaia and featuring seven fabulous performers (2:30-3:45)
From the event theme, to program planning, performance bookings, to space design, his event is entirely designed by student staff, working directly with student LGBTQIA2S+ organizations and individuals at the UBC Vancouver campus, to reflect their vision for a connected, inclusive and supportive campus environment.
We understand that this event may not be not representative of the entire spectrum of experience and identities, but it is our hope that in holding space for community members to come together in this way, we move towards more opportunities for visible and holistic representation of LGBTQIA2S+ communities on campus. If you have any thoughts on how to do this for the next event, please let us know!
“Queering Kinship focuses on rethinking kinship and queerness, exploring how queer identities establish relationships and what it means to connect, build community, and find home.”
– Jesse Medrano, Work Learn, Arts and Culture District UBC
